Installation of neurostimulators

A spinal cord stimulator is a miniature device that is implanted to continuously control pain sensations.
Implantation of a neurostimulation device is a minimally invasive (non-traumatic) surgical intervention. A patient with an implanted neurostimulator is an active participant in the treatment process: with the help of a remote control, he independently controls the function of the device. During activation of the neurostimulator and selection of the desired signal intensity, the electrode stimulates a certain segment of the spinal cord. The goal is to generate a sensation of paresthesias (“tingling” or “pins and needles”) in the painful part of the body, which suppresses the feeling of pain.
Technologies of neurostimulation (neuromodulation) have proven highly effective for pain caused by:
- injuries and surgeries on the spine (failed back surgery syndrome),
- complex regional pain syndrome (pain due to the consequences of limb injuries),
- other types of neuropathic pain (radiculopathy, diabetic neuropathy, postherpetic neuralgia),
- refractory angina pectoris,
- critical ischemia of the lower extremities, which is not amenable to other treatments,
- post-amputation pain syndrome,
- post-thoracotomy syndrome (pain after chest surgery),
- chronic pelvic pain syndrome.
Provided that the neurostimulator is properly selected and properly implanted, the need for drug analgesia is reduced. This significantly improves the quality of life because the pain syndrome can be significantly reduced.
The main indications for the implantation of spinal cord stimulators are disorders of the nervous system that cannot be cured by medication or other methods.
- High efficiency;
- Ability to help in the most difficult cases, when other methods of pain treatment have proven ineffective;
- Long-lasting relief;
- Active participation of the patient in the treatment process.
